A store chain that sells super-cheap food on or near its best-by date is thriving as hard-up Brits struggle to make ends meet. Affordable Foods buys groceries that might otherwise be thrown away and sells them for around half the regular price. Most items are close to, or even past, their best-before date.

Top deals include free-range eggs at 50p a dozen against £1.10 at Sainsbury’s and 85p at Tesco. Customers are filling school lunch boxes with near-date cereal bars for 10p each and 50p grab-bags of crisps. The chain capitalises on waste in the food industry and hard-up customers are all too happy to buy their wares ( Pensioners are buying 20p tins of soup and Kellogg’s Corn Flakes for 80p. The chain, with shops in Stoke, Hull and Gainsborough, Lincs, is part of a growing wave of stores selling end-of-shelf-life products. Most get stock directly from the manufacturers, who say the quality may be lower but the food is still safe to eat. Most of this new breed of food stores sell surplus stock direct from manufacturers at lower prices than major supermarkets ( Britain throws away more than seven million tonnes of edible food and drink every year. Nikki Barrett of the Stoke branch said the stores help “lots of people who don’t qualify for food banks and tax credit who are still really struggling”.
